Artist's notes: 'Waterloo man' painting
Everyone loves this large painting - as a powerful visual statement, and as a valid artistic expression of something familiar. Here is an insight into my artist's processes for this painting.
The bold, rule-breaking composition is a compilation of several photos, in addition to on-site sketching. I re-positioned and re-sized every figure to create a strong image of an everyday scene in this busy London train station.
I like how each figure's story is conveyed with minimal detail, just letting the paint flow and stopping at that. I imposed the design, a cruciform, and the colour - mostly a variety of greys, with intentionally-placed spots of red to repeat the colour in the man's hand.
My inspiration was noticing the darker shapes of everyone's legs against the lighter floor.
